I. Details of IGCSE English (ESL) assessment

The IGCSE English as a Second Language (course code 0510) assessment consists of three part papers covering reading, writing, listening and speaking。It is important to note that the score of the speaking section is recorded independently and is not incorporated into the total score of the written exam。

In the written test, 70 percent of the reading and writing scores are accounted for, and 30 percent of the listening portion is accounted for。

Ii. Overview of GCSE English Assessment

GCSE English is divided into two written papers: the first focuses on creative reading and writing, and the second focuses on understanding the author's point of view, testing reading and writing skills separately。In addition, there is an oral assessment, which does not count towards the total score。

Compared with IGCSE, GCSE English pays more attention to improving students' reading and writing skills, with written papers accounting for 100% of the total grade, while IGCSE includes listening assessment and reading and writing accounting for 70% of the proportion。

 

GCSE and IGCSE English: Performance analysis

In the summer of 2019, CIE held IGCSE English (ESL), students obtained A* level accounted for 4.6%, the proportion of grade A and above reached 20%.1%。

In the same period, only 2 GCses were taken by AQA.One percent of students received the highest grade of 9, and 13 students scored between 7 and 9.6%。

Both programs emphasize a variety of writing styles for different purposes and audiences。Although GCses are primarily for domestic students, the requirements for reading and writing skills may be more rigorous, and students need to demonstrate excellent essay writing ability in order to achieve a high grade。
